Wood Shutter Book Holders

I purchased these at our local Thrift Store for $8. I didn't know what I wanted to use them for, but I knew they had great potential.

They started out as unfinished wood. I coated each one with Rust-Oleum primer and a coat of Rust-Oleum Heirloom White Satin. We live in a SMALL house by the ocean. Did I say small? I mean SMAAAALL. However, Heirloom White just makes everything more open and airy feeling...I just can't tell you how much I love it!

For awhile these hung on the wall in my room. I clipped notes from the kids on them...it was pretty cute. One thing kept bugging me. The top corner of one of the shutters had a chunk missing. Not in a cute shabby chic way. It just looked like a chunk of the shutter was missing. I decided all I needed was to chop off the top portion and make them smaller.

When I say "I needed to chop off the top portion" I really mean, take them to the local hardware store and let them do it...for free. Two minutes away...and they cut it for FREE. I LOVE local businesses!

I love love love the way they look cut smaller. No more missing piece...just cute shutters. I gave a quick shot of paint to the top of each piece where the cuts were made.


I attached a hanger to the back of each shutter. Yep, it is crooked, but it doesn't affect the hanging at all...so, pretend it is straight.


They are the perfect size to slide a book over one of the blades! Just the kind of storage you need in a tiny space...off the floor and up on the walls. And the kids can take a good look at what is there. It is much more visual. I can't wait to put Christmas books on display!


A tiny house with a teeny tiny book nook...pretty cozy. The kids love it...that's all that matters.
